Senior Research Specialist - Neilson AY22

We invite applications from motivated individuals for a senior research specialist position assisting Christopher Neilson, assistant professor of economics and public policy. In addition to assembling and managing data sets, the senior research specialist will prepare computer code that implements estimation of complex microeconometric models of behavior and will write about the results of the models in preparation for publication in leading academic journals.

This is a one-year term position with the possibility of renewal for a second year. End date is dependent on start date, which may vary.


  • Write code that will implement an algorithm that solves an optimization problem.
  • Use concepts from multivariate calculus to guide the search for parameters that minimize a specific objective function that is defined given a specific theory from Microeconomics and Statistics.
  • Assemble and manage data sets.
  • Process and analyze survey data.
  • Perform literature searches and reviews
  • Post and retrieve information from the web
  • Assist in writing academic articles describing the results of analysis



  • Minimum BA/BS degree in Economics, Applied Math, or Computer Science, or BA/BS with significant coursework in Economics, Math, and Statistics
  • Skills in matrix algebra, advanced statistics numerical optimization, microeconomic theory and econometrics
  • Advanced analytical skills and programming skills in coding languages such as Python, matlab, julia
  • Excellent research and writing skills


  • Knowledge of Unix or Linux
  • Knowledge of statistical programming, particularly STATA
  • Familiarity with academic readings such as those required in advanced university training in economics
